“Help it Make Sense?!”

This morning I read an appeal for help on Twitter regarding Louisiana’s Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) from a Louisiana legislator: when “something catastrophic happens; a (sic) under compensated, overworked staffer loses their job, yet, the six figure earners remain in the ivory tower gainfully employed. No accountability at the top. Help it make sense?!”

I believe I can.

A root cause of DCFS’s current condition and its struggles to care for Louisiana’s children is this: Relative to Louisiana’s 2007 budget, Louisiana’s Governors and Legislatures have since underfunded DCFS by $4.8 billion (yes, with a “B”) and have understaffed the agency by about 17,000 employee years.
