Drop in Childhood Vaccination Rates

A drop in childhood vaccination rates has consequences for children. News: 04/03/2025   The American Academy of Pediatricians reports 2 Louisiana Infants Die of Pertussis as Infections Rise. The state’s last infant death from Whooping Cough was in 2018.

Immunization against Whooping Cough (pertussis) prevents 78% of cases in newborns and is 91% effective at preventing hospital stays.

Childhood vaccination rates in Louisiana are declining, putting more children at risk of illness. Recently, Louisiana’s Department of Health stepped back from its leading role in promoting childhood health through vaccinations.

Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) Surgeon General Dr. Ralph Abraham wrote in a memo, “While we encourage each patient to discuss the risks and benefits of vaccination with their provider, LDH will no longer promote mass vaccination.” See Louisiana’s surgeon general puts basic health care out of reach in a poor, unhealthy state, by Greg LaRose in the Louisiana Illuminator.

Promoting vaccination promotes public health, prevents illness, and saves lives.
